I am delighted to share that my new book, On Painting and the Nature of Work, is available for pre-order.

The book recounts and reflects on a remarkable year in my life as I prepared for a major solo exhibition. One morning, a chance encounter with a hummingbird hovering inches from my face seemed to usher in an extended flow-state experience, one that transformed not only my relationship to painting, but also my understanding of work, time, attention, and meaning.

Part studio memoir, part meditation on the creative process, and part philosophical inquiry, the book traces a year in which the practical realities of making paintings intertwined with questions of devotion, mortality, artistic and familial inheritance, and archetype.

Recounted through prose, poetry, and full color reproductions, On Painting and the Nature of Work proposes that the rigors of artistic practice can be genuinely and unexpectedly transformative.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring it into the world.

"This is a gripping and alive integration of influences, magical transmissions, insights into composition and vision that open doors for the reader to help us see our own world with more color and clarity. Amy Ellingson's zest for life frees her to be self-aware about her aesthetics and her emotions with an infectious sincerity and commitment to understand. In the tradition of Anne Truitt's Prospect, this could easily become a classic for painters and art lovers alike."
